Grace Suiter - AS Media Studies
4th September 2014
Today was my first day at Sixth Form and my first AS Media lesson. I found out what my media course was all about and what I would be doing for the next two years and the skills I would need to achieve this. I discovered that I would have to do a Preliminary Task, which involves having to create a short clip including:
-match on action shot
-shot reverse-shot
-180-degree rule
To start off with, I had to create this website using Wix.com, this was the first step for me as I had not created a full on website before! I realise I only have 7 weeks to achieve this task, however it is plenty of time as it is on a much smaller scale compared to our official research & planning, production and evaluation.
Continuity in film
In my first lesson, as a class we were discussing the importance of continuity in film and media. Continuity is the elimination of mistakes; making sure everything looks perfect and that there are not any mistakes. We were discussing the continuity mistake by Downton Abbey, whereby there was a bottle of 'Evian' water in the back of there promotion shot. This is a major continuity mistake becasue their was most definitely not bottled water in the time that Downton Abbey was set (Edwardian Era).
Continuity is also a major element which needs to be demonstrated efficiently because
it makes sure that the clip/film/TV programme flows efficiently and that it seems as close to real
life as possible. Keeping the characters, plot, objects, places and events consistent means that as
an audience, we can easily follow what is happening, as well as remeber and become familiar with
the setting and characters we are watching (surveillance).
In order to make sure that continuity runs smoothly throughout our clip, we will appoint a 'Script
Supervisor' from a member of our group. They will be in charge of telling the director to 'stop' 'start'
and 'pause'. For instance, if we are shooting a scene and somebody's hair comes out of place, it will be the 'Script Supervisors' job to shout 'pause' at the director and direct somebody to fix the mishap. This should ensure that everything and everybody runs perfectly!
5th September 2014
Today I was researching the different camera angles which I have to use in order to complete my preliminary task. I decided to research and find examples of:
-match on action shot
-shot reverse shot
-180-degree rule
Finding examples of these three camera terms has allowed me to have a full understanding of what they are, and how to use them, most importantly in my small 30 second clip. Once I had done this, I was editing to this website as well organising my group. My group consists of Rhianna Flett, Katie Summers and myself. We had a brief discussion as to what our short clip should be about; we discussed a break up, an argument and a proposal, however we have not officially decided.
