Storyboard - 10th September

A storyboard uses images and text to explain what is happening in each cut of a clip. It is basically used as a draft to establish what will happen in each scene; this is good for the script supervisor because they can then make sure everything stays continual. As a class we decided that we should keep it detailed so that it is easy for the examiner to follow and undertsand the matching images and annotations. To make sure our storyboard is precise, we decided to add notes of any props or costumes we may need to bring in on a specific day. This makes sure that our clip is continual and flows properly and looks as professional as it can. We also added annotations of the shots we would be using in order for the director to be able to stick to our brief and use the necessary shots required.

Treatment - 11th September 2014

In Todays lesson we were talking about treatment and what it is to do in media. Treatment is getting organised and ready for filming and so as a group, we discussed what props, characters, settings and costumes we will need. We came to the conclusion that we needed additional characters as well as Tommy and I. We will need about 3 extras just to sit in our 'doctors surgery reception' to make it more realistic because they are normally busy. We also thought we would need a lab coat to act as a doctors coat as well as a stethescope because stereotypically doctors wear them. For a waiting room, we decided we will use the front of one of the business rooms because it is relatively simple so it won't take anything away from the fliming. We also decided we would need a clipboard; not to actually be used in the film, but to help the script supervisor organise all of their papers, so they can just flip them easily. The doctors room will be used in one of the teachers offices' because they look the most professional and they are also located so we can do the shot reverse shot quite easily. The walk from the waiting room to the office is down one of the hallways which is easily accessible to both locations.

When it came to Make-up and costumes, we decided to keep it relatively basic because patients do not tend to dress up to go for a check up. The only costume we thought we may need to add would be the lab coat for Tommy because it is quite a stereotypical necessity. Also, because the clip is meant to be a comedy and stay quite light hearted, we didn't want anything too strenuous or over the top. The office we finally decided to use was also perfectly eqipped and because we were using the 180-degree-rule, it gave the illusion that there was more room behind the camera.

As a group we decided that Tommy and I would do the main acting and Rhianna would do the filming. For the first cut of the clip, we needed some extras to act because we wanted the doctor's surgery reception to seem busy and as realistic as possible. We used Jonny and Josh as two secretaries/receptionists and Arthur and Jordan as patients who were waiting. Tommy wasn't in this clip because he is acting as the Doctor.  As Rhianna was the camerawoman, we decided she could also be the script supervisor because she was looking out for any continuity mistakes. As we were filming over three days, I wore the same outfit otherwise it would've looked completely out of place and it wouldn't have run smoothly. We bagan filming on Monday 15th September and then continued on Thursday 18th and finished on Friday 19th. As we finished and had time to spare, we decided we would upload our footage onto the computer and start using Sony Vegas to put our clips together. Once we had played them consequtively, we found that it looked quite good but obviously needed some editing to make it look more professional.

Filming 15th - 19th September 2014

We started filming on Monday 15th Septemeber and we filmed the first cut which was in the 'Doctors Surgery Reception.' For this cut we used 4 extras to make the cut as realistic as possible. We used Josh and Jonny as two receptionists and Jordan and Arthur as two patients. Then on the Thursday we filmed me walking towards the door. We used a close up to show my face and a canted angle to show me approaching the door. It took many different cuts to get it right because either the camera was shaking or the angle just wasn't working. The following Friday, we shot the cut where I opened the door, walked through and had a 2 sentence conversation. We used a close up of my hand as it opened the door and then a two-shot as I entered the office and sat down opposite Tommy. Rhianna then used a 180-degree-rule throughout the rest of the clip. The Shot-Reverse-Shot was used while me and Tommy exchanged our two sentence conversation.  Throughout the clip we used the three camera angles necessary to fit the description of the brief.

Editing 22nd September 2014

As a group we uploaded our individual clips onto the cache drive to enable all of us to access to the clips as we pleased. We used Sony Vegas Pro to sequence all of our clips together and this was our first step. Once we had done this, we decided we would play it all together and see what steps to take next. We decided that we should shorten some of the clips as they were too long and just made the whole video drag. Once we had shorted the clips we played it all together once more and we were very pleased with the outcome. We did experiment with effects such as Black & White and Blur however we didn't think that added anything extra to the video and so we left it as it was. We also didn't add any background music because we struggled to find any Copyright free music on the internet and discovered it was quite time consuming; considering we were sticking to a schedule. If we had more time to search for the music, we probably would have found a clip suitable somewhere however it was too time consuming and not a good time management. Once we had finished all of this, we watched it once more and checked we had met the brief, which we had, a rendered our video and uploaded it onto Youtube.
