Initial Ideas - 28th December 2015

When we first began the project, Katie and I were immediately drawn to the idea of a using a both performance and narrative elements in our music video. However, our in depth research into stereotypical conventions of a indie music video allowed our imagination to be widened and new ideas to be created. We realised that the narrative of a break-up between a female and a male was really stereotypical and not in a conventional way because it has been so many times, that it now looks cliché to the audience and lacks originality, which is required to intrigue the audience. Therefore, after a group discussion and completing our audience research, we decided to base our music video around performance and concept. We thought the use of concept would be more enigmatic for the audience because it isn't as clear cut as just telling a story for narrative. The use of concept allows us to be more imaginative and use unusual props to suggest different things to the audience, instead of just telling them. This allows the audience to remember the music video more than one, which looks the same as all the other indie-pop love songs that have been released. Similarly, as a group we watched some of Lauren's previous music videos for us to attempt to abide by her stereotypical conventions and she has also used concept because she has used keys hanging from the ceiling in her 'fools' music video and these suggest different meanings to the audience and can amplify the meaning of the song. Similarly, in her oceans music video, the image of the sea has been edited into the video and is replacing the ground and this suggests that she is in constant fear of drowning, even though she's not. Therefore, the use of the double meanings and unusual props should be used in our music video to assist with the stereotypical conventions of our artist, as well as those of the indie-pop genre.

As a group we have brainstormed many different ideas and many of our ideas are based around editing techniques to increase or decrease the look of the shot. As well as to manipulate the look of the shot, including its pace because we would like to increase the speed of the shot but make it look slow-motion at the same time, therefore the manipulation of the shot is key. Similarly, we want to use locations that are relatable for the audience to allow personal identity to be found, as well as personal relationships with the characters in the video. We are currently using the idea of having extreme long shots, close ups and all in between in a field to show the vulnerability of a relationship, which contrasts the initial perception of togetherness in a relationship, creating a thought for the audience to consider and think about. Additionally, casual clothing will be worn to heighten the personal relationship between the audience and the character in the music video. Everyday props will also be used in addition with everyday emotions that people feel whilst in a troublesome relationship.

We also want to have closeups of the female character singing the chorus but also have fast cuts to when there are no lyrics, of the female in the same position but just looking distressed and we got this idea from Calvin Harris & Disciples, How Deep is your love music video where Gigi Hadid is shaking her head and moving it in circular motions and this is fast paced or increased in speed to create its intensity and this is an idea we have thought of and are considering to use.
