Hairstyle

Hairstyle

We thought the natural wavy hair didn't look over the top, but still shows that the character cares about her appearance

The image labelled left shows the make up we will use for the shots where the character is in a normal state and not upset, just living her everyday life and slowly as the music video progresses, we can clearly see the make up become more smudged and the character becoming less happy and this is demonstrated in the image labelled right. The image labelled full face demonstrates the difference between the two make up styles and to synergise between the magazine advert, digipak and music video, we plan on keeping the make up and costume similar but distinguishingly different throughout.  We are also only having one character in the music video because it is performance and concept based and we thought that having the whole music video based around her would also be a stereotypical convention of the indie-pop genre. It also allows us to focus the costume and make up all around the one character. We decided against having a male character and act out the break up like a narrative because it can look really clichè and that isn't how we wanted our music video to look.

LOCATION

Alleyway

Alleyway

The shot in the alleyway will be fast paced and will have varied different shots of the character walking in a distressed manner. Again increasing intensity.

Field

Field

The field is the location where we plan on using an extreme long, which gradually ends up with a close up of the character. This is used to create suspense and tension because straight cuts will be used instead of a gradual zoom in.

EDITING

I am an avid fan of watching music channels and I find this has helped me with my creativity of developing potential editing techniques for this particular Year 13 assignment. When watching this music video for How Deep is Your Love, I really liked the editing effect 0:26 seconds in, which last for around four seconds. It is really fast paced and overlapping occurs and I think it looks really disorientating and effective and builds enigma because the aim of our music video is to highlight both feelings of a relationship and show that not everything is as it seems. Therefore I really like the look of this editing technique and I am keen to use it if we are able to develop our editing techniques by then.

Again, watching other music videos, not even from the same genre, can develop different editing techniques by demonstrating ones that we may not of thought of originally. Katie suggested this music video where Shawn Mendes is the only character, which is similar to our music video because it is also concept and performance based. 1:07 minutes into the music video there is editing done to make the character look as though he has been hit and is therefore fallen, when he hasn't actually been hit, it is the camera angles and movements that give the illusion. This is another technique we would like to use because it is shocking and unexpected due to the character being the only one on the screen.

As a group we all collectively decided that the black and white/grey scale effect is the effect we would like to add to our music video because we also watched some other love songs including Adele, Someone Like You and One Direction's Perfect and these filter looks very emotional and adds to the ambience and feel of the music video and also amplifies the video.

Justin's video has only been recently released and many of his newer material has been much more creative compared to his older material. This particular music video has a variety of different landscape shots with the artist in it and is again concept and performance. Right at the beginning there is a shot of the artist and the shot distances change but the artist is still heading the same way. This looks similar to the editing technique we plan on using. 1:56 into the music video there is a change between deep focus and shallow focus which also looks really effective and could be another technique we use to create ambience.

LIGHTING

In our music video we would like to use black and white/grey scale, like used in the Perfect video, performed by One Direction because it adds some emotion and is much more intense but romantic at the same time. Eventhough it has a darker filter, the lighting is still high key because everyone is clear and nothing is implicit, everything is explicit and we can clearly see that the lighting is even higher key when they are happy, but more low key 2:43 minutes into the video when Harry has his solo and it feels more intimate and less exposed. The lighting assists with the expression of these emotions and therefore by us using this filter, we aim to also express the different emotions the character is feeling.

PROPS

Mobile Phone

Mobile Phone

A mobile phone is an extremely stereotypical object for a teenager/young adult to own, and therefore by the character having one, it is creating personal identity for the audience because they can imagine themselves in the particular situation and imagine what they would do in the same situation.

Guitar

Guitar

When we conducted our audience research, many of our respondents said that they would expect an acoustic guitar to be in the music video. This was probably a popular response due to its stereotypical relationship within the indie genre. Therefore if we can source an acoustic guitar, it would definitely be a valuable prop to have and may help the audience identify the genre of the music video.

Clock

Clock

As a group, we had the initial idea of having the clock speeding up or going backwards to manipulate the time, to confuse the audience and because our music video will be both concept and performance, we need to have certain props to allow the audience to feel confused.

Ring

Ring

I thought that the prop would be suitable because the ring symbolises love and trust within a relationship. However, in the context of our music video it can suggest broken trust, and this connotation suits the concept element of our music video.

When we conducted our audience research, we asked our interviewees what they expected from an indie-pop music video and a popular response was to have varied lanscape shots and we therefore thought that we could use a large field in Downham Market to have the vulnerable shots the female characer. Similarly, we discovered a small alleyway closeby, which we thought could have fast paced editing with varied shots of the female character upset. As well as having scenic

locations, we will also be filming in a house setting in a living room or kitchen/dining area, again to create familiarity and to allow personal identity to be found. It also highlights the isolation of when people feel upset and this adds to the concept part of the music video.

Outfit One

Outfit One

This outfit will be worn during the performance part of the music video when we will be close up to the character and against a plain, white background.

Outfit two

Outfit two

This outfit will be worn throughout the remainder of the music video during the shot in the car, looking distressed, etc.

Outfit three

Outfit three

This outfit is the same as the outfit two but is just the coat, which will be worn when the shots outside are done. This includes the shots as she is walking towards the camera, standing in the rain and sat by the tree.

Shoes

Shoes

These are the shoes that will be worn, during to their rise in popularity and the fact that the audience will be able to relate themselves in the video if the costume is youthful and appealing to them

The first outfit is a simple white cami top with black leggins and this will be the outfit worn during the performance. When the character is lip-synching the lyrics and sat/standing against a white/plain wall this is the outfit that will be worn. The white t-shirt has connotations of innocence and purity and these are worthwhile connotations to suggest to the audience because it makes them sympathise with her.

The second outfit is for the remainder of the music video and is quite casual and the casual clothing is a stereotypical convention of indie-pop music videos, as seen in some of Ellie Goulding and George Ezra's music videos. The colour pink is stereotypically feminine and highlights the female and male division in the relationships.
